Michigan Made Beers, Wines & Spirits Shine at
Grand Rapids International Wine & Food Festival

(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich) – Of the 1000+ beers, wines, ciders and spirits to be featured at the 2nd Annual Grand Rapids International Wine & Food Festival, as many as 200 are proudly crafted in Michigan. Nearly three dozen micro-breweries, wineries and distilleries will showcase their products November 12-14 in the elegance of the Steelcase Ballroom at DeVos Place. Additionally, seven paid seminars will be held throughout the weekend offering an in-depth look at the products that are hand-crafted here in the Great Lakes State.

The craft beverage industry continues to grow in Michigan at an impressive rate, boosting the state’s ever present agri-tourism industry (www.michigan.gov/agtourism) and up-and-coming culinary-tourism industry. Currently, agriculture is touted as Michigan’s #2 industry ($71+ billion), while tourism ranks at #3 ($18 billion).

Wine, grapes, grape juice products and related industries produced nearly $790 million of total economic value to the State of Michigan, in 2005. In addition, the industry paid more than $42 million in state and local taxes in Michigan, and an additional $42 million in federal taxes and accounted for more than 5,000 jobs across the state, for a payroll of more than $190 million. Michigan’s wine industry is promoted via the Michigan Grape & Wine Industry Council (www.MichiganWines.com) through the Michigan Department of Agriculture (www.Michigan.gov/MDA).

Michigan’s thriving brewing industry contributes over $24 million in wages with a total economic contribution of more than $133 million. In terms of overall number breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs, Michigan ranks #6 in the nation – thus supporting its claim as “The Great Beer State.” Several recent initiatives have also resulted in growing of hops in Michigan, to help support the state’s brewing industry. Michigan’s brewing industry is promoted via the Michigan Brewers Guild (www.MichiganBrewersGuild.org) and copies of their annual magazine, Michigan-The Great Beer State, will be available at the Michigan brewery booths.

Currently, Michigan boasts 11 licensed artisan distilleries across the state producing top-notch vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, brandy and au de vie from agricultural commodities such as rye, grapes, wheat and various locally-grow fruits. Currently, Michigan ranks second only to California in the number of licensed distilleries. In 2008, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation estimated that given the appropriate licensing, distilleries could generate $414 million in economic activity and 1400 new jobs for the state.
