WM Home and Garden Show Offers Free TV Recycling

The 2009 West Michigan Garden Show will give visitors a chance to responsibly dispose of their old televisions and then get into the Show and shop for a new one – or for hundreds of other products and services – and to do both for free!

The Show is partnering with Kent County’s Resource Recovery Program to offer the service on Thursday, March 5th, opening day of the show.

Show organizers say interest in this program will be high, because of the upcoming switch to digital broadcasting, and because many people are purchasing new flat-screen televisions.

Recycling an old unit is important because televisions contain various toxic substances, including lead, chromium, and mercury, among others, which are harmful to both human health and the environment. These heavy metals can leach into the subsoil and water table and poison local soil and water resources.

“We’re glad to present this opportunity to people in the community,” says Show Manager Carolyn Alt.  “We hope to make it a little easier for people to deal with a hard-to-recycle item, and we’re happy to provide free admission for those who take advantage.”

Anyone who brings in an old TV between 3pm and 9pm on Opening Day will receive a free admission coupon, good any day of the show.

Organizers say the whole process couldn’t be simpler.  “All people will need to do is pull their car up to the trailer under the awning on Monroe Street, in front of DeVos Place, and Resource Recovery staff members will help them unload the televisions,” says the show’s Promotions Director, Derek Lancioni.  “We want this to be as easy and pleasant as possible.”
