First Responders & Military Day

Kicks Off 2019 Michigan International Auto Show

MEDIA PHOTO / VIDEO OPPORTUNITY

The firetrucks from HME will be driven to DeVos Place by firefighters from the Allendale Fire Department schedule to arrive around 8am. This will make for a great media opportunity as the trucks come into the building and make their way through the main exhibition halls and into their featured spot in the Grand Gallery (with the glass wall and river as a backdrop). These firefighters can also be available for interviews as needed.

If you are interested in joining us that morning, please contact our show publicist.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — The opening day of the 2019 Michigan International Auto Show will be special in many ways – including FREE admission for First Responders (active EMS, Fire, Police, Public Safety and Coast Guard) as well as active or retired Military personnel on Thursday, January 31.

Show organizers have also brought in a variety of emergency vehicles to help focus attention on these important individuals and what they do on a daily basis to keep us safe on the road, at home or at work.

Wyoming, Michigan based HME Ahrens-Fox® will display three firetrucks in the Grand Gallery including an aerial, custom pumper and mini pumper. Not only will attendees be able to get up close to see these magnificent vehicles, but they’ll be able to get inside them to check out all the bells and whistles.

In this same area, the Grand Rapids Police Department will showcase a cruiser, Segway, Spyder and BMW motorcycle; a Hummer will be on display from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. Adjacent to this display, the Gilmore Car Museum will feature three emergency vehicles in their exhibit including a 1926 Chevrolet Fire Truck, a 1928 Model A Ford Fire Truck and a 1957 Ford Custom 300 State of Michigan Patrol Car.

For more than 30 years, HME Ahrens-Fox® has called West Michigan home, yet the roots of the company date back more than 100 years.

The Ahrens-Fox® company was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio when John Ahrens and Charles Fox built their first motorized fire engine in 1911 – one year before the end of production of horse-drawn fire apparatus. Known for their quality, power, durability and long service life, they served many departments around the world. HME was founded just a couple years later (1913) by Magnus Hendrickson, an innovative designer and manufacturer of custom truck chassis. He was one of the first engineers of his day to see the potential of two rear-axles, along with the incorporation of suspension systems. Today there still remains a division of Magnus Hendrickson’s original company, still bearing the name “Hendrickson,” that continues to supply suspensions for trucks and trailers.

In 1988, HME relocated its manufacturing to a suburb of Grand Rapids, where they began to design and manufacture a line of fire truck chassis. In the early 1990s, they entered the industry as an independent manufacturer of cabs and chassis for apparatus manufacturers across North America and around the world when they launched the HME 1871 Series® – a line of custom fire truck chassis. In the spring of 2002, HME took another giant step forward by designing, engineering, and manufacturing a line of complete fire apparatus. HME introduced the SilverFox® and the Ahrens-Fox® fire apparatus lines with the objective of providing quality custom fire apparatus that are easy to maintain, durable and highly cost effective. In 2010 HME introduced the world’s first 100% compressed natural gas-powered fire truck. The HME Ahrens-Fox® CNG is the first fire, EMS and rescue response vehicle powered by a clean emission, compressed natural gas (CNG) engine.
